Michael A. Marette's Obituary
Michael A. Marette passed away November 6, 2024, in Lakeland, Fl. He was born July 31, 1949, in Hibbing, MN to Kathleen (O’Brien) and John Robert Marette.
Mike’s early years working as a correctional officer for the MN Dept. of Corrections at Oak Park Heights Prison culminated his career in the labor movement as the Assistant Director of Corrections for the largest public sector employee union in the US, the American Federation of State, County and Municipal (AFSCME). In this position, he traveled throughout the US and Puerto Rico negotiating strong contracts for the corrections and law enforcement workers. Mike served on the National Prison Rape Elimination Commission (NPREC) that was established by President George W. Bush in 2003.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Katherine and John Robert Marette, his brother John Robert “Bobby” Marette Jr., infant daughter Mary Christine and granddaughter Cassie Malueg.
Mike is survived by the love of his life, Bonnie, whom he married in 2003. His brother Phillip (Bonnie Fehrman) Marette. Children, Christopher (Kristi) Kampsula, Brenda (Don) Nelson, Erin (Gary) Sawyer and Michael Chad Marette, along with grandchildren, Ally, Tyler (Baylee), Faith, Sadie, Taylar, Makayla, Cheyanne, Michael and great granddaughter Tori.
To honor Mike’s wishes, there will be no services. We invite you to celebrate Mike’s memory in your own way. We know that he will be with all of us in spirit. Thank you for your understanding.
