Jack was my brother-in-law and a true brother to me as well as my siblings. He was also a cherished uncle to my children, Alexander and Catherine Charles as he was to all our nephews. I am forever grateful to Jack and my sister, Marlene for the support they gave to my son when he attended he U.S. Naval Academy. As Alexander balanced his academics and military duties, Jack and Marlene lived about 45 minutes from the academy and frequently picked up Alex for the weekend for a break from Annapolis until he had his car. I always felt at peace because I knew his aunt and uncle were near by. Thank you for being a bright star for the family, and I know you will continue to shine down at Marlene and us. Jack was a very good friend of mine. I first recall seeing Jack in the 10th grade. Jack was originally from California. I don’t recall when Jack moved to Galveston but remember him in the 10th grade. Jack and two other friends had four classes together until we graduated in 1965. Jack was in the band and played the drums. Doing concerts and competition Jack was our lead drummer because he read music better than the other drummers.

After graduation, the next time I saw Jack was twice in Japan on two different occasions. After the navy I saw Jack at a class reunion. This was the first and only time I met Marlene, who impressed me very much. That was the last time I saw Jack.

We stayed in communication for many years, even when he fell ill by e-mail. Jack would send me pictures from Egypt. Where he was a producer with the Discovery Channel. This made me very proud to see a classmate doing very well.

When Jack sent me e-mail about his cancer and other medical problems, it hit me hard. I will forever miss my very good friend Jack. What I remember most about Jack was his dry sense of humor. His humor reminded me of the cartoonist Garl Lawson who did “The Far Side”.

My condolences to Marlene and all the members of the Smith family. To all the people that were CC in Jack’s e-mail. I feel the pain the you must feel with the passing of Jack. Life is even shorter now at our age so make the best of the time we have left.
