Virginia L. Jones' Obituary
Virginia Leola Jackson Ross Jones died peacefully in her home at age 97, surrounded by loved ones, on August 14, 2025. Born in 1927, Virginia and her eight siblings were raised on a wheat and cotton farm in rural Oklahoma. In 1945, Virginia married Henry Thomas Ross, who had recently returned from service as a Navy Seabee in World War II. They followed Henry’s work as a lineman through Alabama and Mississippi, eventually settling in Florida, where they had four children. When Henry died unexpectedly in 1966, Virginia was widowed with school-aged children. She worked tirelessly at multiple jobs to support her family until finding a career she enjoyed at the United States Postal Service. While working at the Post Office, she met Jerry B. Jones, and they married in 1978 and enjoyed a happy marriage until his death in 1995. Virginia spent her retirement years deeply involved with her family, her church, and her community.
Virginia was a faithful Christian and a bright light of love and kindness in the world. Her light shined brightest as a member of Crestview Baptist Church, to which she belonged for over 30 years. She was a fixture at every service and every church event. She used her beautiful singing voice in the choir for many years, and she knew every hymn by heart. She answered every call to volunteer, whether cooking in the kitchen, decorating tables, or working at the church festival. She immensely enjoyed the church bus trips and her adventures traveling around North America with her beloved church community.
Virginia also found time to pursue her various hobbies and interests. She was a skilled seamstress and enjoyed quilting and crocheting. Her family has been blessed with quilts and blankets handmade with love to enjoy for years to come. She was also an avid gardener her whole life, maintaining a lovely collection of plants and growing pineapples until her death. Virginia found joy in playing card games, rarely missing a weekly gathering to play cards with her friends from church. She was a dedicated crossword puzzle solver and spent hours putting together jigsaw puzzles with her family.
Virginia was a devoted mother to four children - Harold Ross, Frank Ross, Leslie Ross, and Janice Ross Tyler - a beloved grandmother to 12 grandchildren, and a cherished great-grandmother to 11 great-children, all of whom survive her. She is also survived by three sisters - Dortha Adler, Mary Fischer, and Grace Wagner - and one brother, Jack Jackson.
