Sirpa Tellervo Hoover
Lakeland - Sirpa Tellervo Hoover, 82, passed away on January 15th, 2019 at Lakeland Regional Medical Center.
Ms. Hoover was born on August 1st, 1936 in Karjala, Finland. She spent her early years in Helsinki, Finland and attended Helsinki University, from which she received a degree in linguistics in 1961. She first came to the United States in 1956 as a Fulbright Scholar, studying at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH, where she met her future husband, Gerald Hoover. They were married in 1959 and moved to Helsinki together, where they lived while she completed her degree. Returning to the United States in 1961, they settled in Chicago where they remained until retiring to Lakeland in 2004. Ms. Hoover was a Certified Public Accountant in the state of Illinois and enjoyed a long career both as controller for several Chicago-based companies and in private practice. She also maintained a keen interest in her Finnish cultural heritage and served with the Finnish American Chamber of Commerce. Ms. Hoover was also devoted to classical music, opera and the theatre and provided much encouragement and support to her sons in their own creative endeavors. In addition to her husband, Ms. Hoover is survived by her sons, Eric P. Hoover of Orlando and Christopher J. Hoover of Evanston, IL, sister-in-law, Marlene Novack of Lancaster, OH, cousins, Ensio (Lea) Selin and Birger Lindstrom of Helsinki, Finland, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
A celebration of her life for her family and friends will be held at a later date. Arrangements are being handled by Gentry Morrison Funeral Home, Lakeland. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association (www.alz.org).
