Shirley Sullens Farris' Obituary
Shirley (Sullens) Farris died Tuesday, August 22 at the age of 86, following a stroke. She was a faithful member of the Church of Christ and worshipped with the Highlands Church of Christ since 1981.
Shirley was born on March 22, 1937 in Winfield, Alabama to George and Alpha Sullens. She was the youngest of this union with five other siblings, one sister and four brothers, two of which died in infancy.
Shirley and Merle Farris were married at Eldridge, Alabama on July 21,1956. They were married 67 years and had two sons, Michael Wayne and Scotty Dwain who is deceased. She worked at various jobs while her husband attended college. Her love for children was evident throughout her life. For many years she enjoyed teaching young children about God and His son, Jesus and helping to mold their character. She especially enjoyed time with her granddaughters (one 'adopted') and her seven great grandchildren. Earlier in life she enjoyed summer vacations at the beach with close friends Louise Lilley, Mary Holder, and Martha Harris.
She is survived by her husband, Merle Farris, and son, Mike Farris, and her two granddaughters and seven great grandchildren and sister Catherine Grant of Winfield, Alabama.
A viewing will be held at Highlands Church of Christ, 5730 Lakeland Highlands Road on Tuesday, August 29 from 10-11 AM after which a celebration of life will follow. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery in Bartow, Fl.
A special 'thank you' to long-time friends Bob and Wanda Walmsley for their tremendous support as Shirley's health declined.
