Scott Sungkoo Kim, MD
General and Oncologic Surgeon
Lakeland – Dr. Scott Kim, 79, passed away on April 25, 2015 at Lakeland Regional Medical Center. He was born in Eusung, South Korea and retired to Lakeland, FL from Pittsburgh, PA in 2004.
Scott served as a flight surgeon in the Air Force of the Republic of South Korea from 1961 to 1965. He completed his residency in General Surgery at McKeesport Hospital and was a fellow in Surgical Oncology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York. He then became an Attending Physician/Surgeon at McKeesport Hospital and Jefferson Medical Center in the Pittsburgh, PA area, where he helped to train and mentor residents in surgery throughout his career. Scott loved to fish and enjoyed playing the strategic game of GO, winning the Pittsburgh Regional Korean Association Championship multiple times. A lover of nature, he was an avid gardener. Scott was known for his exceptional surgical skill and compassionate patient care, as well as his dedication to family, friends and the community.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Katheryn Kim of Lakeland; sons, John Kim of New York, NY, Jay (Kristine) Kim of Durham, NC, Michael Kim of Philadelphia, PA; sister, Unji Kim; nephew, Yong Soo Kim, both of Korea; grandchildren, Olivia, Amanda, Jonathan, Zachary, Mikayla and Michael, Jr.
Visitation with the family will be Thursday, 10 – 11am at Tampa Korean United Methodist Church, 26211 County Line Rd., Wesley Chapel, FL. Funeral services will follow at 11:00am. Arrangements by Gentry-Morrison Funeral Homes, Southside Chapel, Lakeland, FL.
