Robert D Hoagland's Obituary
Brother Robert Delos Hoagland passed away July 5, 2021. A strong man of faith, he maintained his great sense of humor, sharp mind, and strong will throughout his life. He loved people and never met a stranger. He greatly enjoyed traveling with his wife, playing harmonica and clarinet, chess, golf, and visiting with friends.
Robert was born May 17, 1929, in Howard, NY, to Sherriff Stanley Hoagland and Matron Gladys Hoagland. Being raised on a farm, he showed a strong interest in farming and agriculture at a young age, eventually leading to his owning and operating his own dairy farm. Robert formed a close bond with his mentor Wayne Crandall, his older brother Charles’ high school agriculture teacher. Mr. Crandall encouraged Robert to continue his education. He assisted him with applying to his alma mater, Cornell University’s Agriculture and Science Program as well as join the wrestling team. In 1953, at age 24, Robert received his Master’s with his major in Education. He spent the next 16 years teaching Agriculture and Science, and another 20 years as School Superintendent, the latter being the highlight of his career. After retiring in 1986, he still felt he had work to do and worked in the Cornell University transportation department, training and certifying bus drivers. He took great pride in being a public servant and Freemason.
Robert and Evelyn married July 7, 1951, as soon as she graduated high school. They would have been married for 70 years. Robert is survived by his wife, Evelyn Hoagland, and two sons Robert and Stanley (Victoria). There will be no memorial service.
