Newton Hilliard Murdock, 80, passed away from complications of a fall on Aug. 31, 2014.
Mr. Murdock was born in Ashford, AL on Jan. 24, 1934. He moved to Winter Haven at age 14 and later graduated from Winter Haven High School. He served in the National Guard and became a Florida Highway Patrolman stationed in Hardee County. He then served as Sheriff for 16 years for Hardee County. He then served as a Major for the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office where he retired. During his retirement he worked as an agricultural crop adjuster. Mr. Murdock was a member of First Baptist Church at the Mall, and a lifetime member of Kiwanis.
Mr. Murdock is survived by his wife of 61 years, Christine Murdock; daughters, Deborah (Bill) Choate-Banter, Patricia (Ronald) Wilson and Connie (Danny) Coker; sisters, Martha (Fred) Williams and Mary Lou Green; 8 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren; and a large extended family.
Visitation will be Wed. from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Gentry-Morrison Funeral Home, 3350 Mall Hill Dr. Lakeland. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday in the chapel at First Baptist Church at the Mall, 1010 E. Memorial Blvd., Lakeland at 11:00am with an hour of visitation prior from 10:00-11:00am. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Compassion House at FBC at the Mall or the Gideons International.
