Marguerite "Maggie" Barrett Greeson's Obituary
MARGUERITE 'MAGGIE' BARRETT GREESON, 94
LAKELAND
Marguerite 'Maggie' Barrett Greeson, age 94, Lakeland, Florida, died Friday, August 29, 2014.
She was born February 6, 1920, in Valley Falls, New York, to Peter and Catherine Barrett. She and her identical twin, Kathleen, were among the first twins to be born in Valley Falls. She loved to tell stories about their early years and the lifetime of fun and great memories they shared. She attended school in Valley Fails where she won the spelling bee in 7th grade. Her circle of close friends were nicknamed 'the Lilies of the Valley.' She attended Troy Business College in Troy, NY. After college, Maggie worked at the Troy Credit Bureau and later at Watervliet Arsenal in Watervliet, NY, where she met the love of her life, Capt. Edward Greeson. They were married June 3, 1944. They had one son, Edward O (Ned) Greeson, Jr. Although she spent most of her life in the Latham, NY, area, after WWII, she and Ed lived in St. Louis for a time. She enjoyed many years of part-time residence on Success Avenue in Lakeland and 20 years ago they moved to Highland Fairways. She spent six months at Valencia Hills Health and Rehabilitation in Lakeland before her death.
Maggie was known for her quick wit and her passion for living. She loved dogs and her son's dogs often spent the afternoon curled up in her lap. She liked to travel and to play golf, but always joked that it was because she could wear cute golf outfits and have fun with 'the girls.' She was a member of the Church of the Resurrection, Red Hats, and Highland Fairways Angels; and a former member of the PEO and Watervliet Arsenal Pitch and Putt.
She is survived by her twin sister Katie Doring, son Ned (Debbie Amanatides), grandson Michael Owen Greeson, nephews Ray (Merry) Doring, Greg (Joni) Greeson, Gary (An) Greeson, Gordon (Jan) Greeson, and her niece Gigi (Wayne) Cornell, several grandnephews and nieces including Matthew (Jill) Doring and Amy (Scott) Kesling. She was predeceased by her loving husband Edward Greeson, her parents, sisters Betty Walsh and Helen Barrett, beloved daughter in law Rosemary Greeson, and brother in law Jack Greeson.
A memorial service will be held Friday, September 5 at 11:00 a.m. (visitation at 10:00 a.m.) at Gentry-Morrison Funeral Home, 350 Mall Hill Drive, Lakeland. Burial will follow at the Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell.
Highland Fairways friends are invited to join the family at the clubhouse for a light meal at 4:00 p.m. Memorials may be given to the Highland Fairways Golf Association.
