M.D. Manuel J Hernandez's Obituary
Manuel J. Hernandez, M.D., age 86, passed away on May 26, 2017, at home. He was born on May 20th, 1931, in Camagüey, Cuba, to Manuel Hernandez and Luz Acosta. He was the oldest of three children.
He graduated from medical school at the University of Havana, Cuba, in 1960.
He came to the United States, in 1969, as a political refugee, after enduring 6 years of punishment, for opposing the Castro regime. He worked as a staff physician at DeJarnette State Sanatorium, in Staunton, Virginia, from 1969 to 1971, and at Southwestern State Hospital in Marion, Virginia, from 1971 to 1976. He then entered private practice, as a family physician, in Lakeland, from which he retired, in 2012. He also served as a staff physician, at Lakeland Regional Medical Center, from 1976, until 2002.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Luz Acosta de Hernandez, his father, Manuel Hernandez, and his sisters Ledia Hernandez and Luz Pichardo.
He is survived by his daughter, Dr. Teresita Hernandez, son-in-law Dr. Vicente Rodriguez, daughter Dr. Ana Lipson, son-in-law Dr. Eric Lipson, son Christopher Hernandez, daughter-in-law Megan Hernandez, and grandchildren Mark and Rebeccah Lipson, and Olivia Hernandez.
A Mass, at Resurrection Catholic Church, will be held on 06/16/2017 at 11 A.M.
There will be a Mass in Miami, on June 23rd, at 11 A.M., at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Cemetery.
