Julia Barker's Obituary
Julia Barker, 94, passed away March 26 at home, comforted by her husband and younger son. She was born in New Jersey to Katherine and William Barnhill, but was raised by her aunt Edna and uncles Harry and Tom Sloan in Philadelphia. She was preceded in death by her daughter Edna. She was survived by her husband of 71 years Harold, and children Daniel and David (Sandy), grandchildren Laura and Kevin, and sister Eileen.
She survived a scarlet fever epidemic as a child. She lost her hearing in one ear and her sight in one eye, but this never slowed her down. She had many stories of growing up on Sheffield Avenue in Philadelphia and working summers in Atlantic City.
She attended The King's College in Delaware where she married the pot washer.
She lived for many years in Sudbury Massachusetts where she designed and implemented an award-winning garden.
She enjoyed family camping trips all over New England and the Maritimes. In the summer of 1964, she packed a VW Beetle with tents, cook stoves, sleeping bags and three young children and drove to Washington state and back, camping in State, Provincial, and National Parks in the US and Canada. Later in life she continued to travel, going on ocean and river cruises with Harold.
She had many jobs, but she most enjoyed teaching second grade at Saint Bridget's in Maynard, Massachusetts.
We are grateful to all of the wonderful help provided by the caregivers and staff at Home Instead, especially Joyce, Kathleen, Kitty and Mary.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the National Parks.
