John William Vickers' Obituary
Lakeland – Mr. John W. Vickers, 67, passed away on Wednesday, February 24, 2016. He was born in Fayetteville, TN and moved to Lakeland over 64 years ago. John proudly worked for Publix for over 43 years, starting as a bag boy at age 16, moving on to stocking, then worked as a Print Shop Specialist and trainer. He was a 2nd degree black belt in Judo and a member of the Imperial Dragon Judo Club. John loved introducing Judo to beginners and especially enjoyed training children in the Martial Arts. He was an avid Florida Gator football fan, and an all- around college and NFL football enthusiast. He loved to discuss facts and stats with anyone who loved the game, as he did. He traveled often to the Smokey Mountains with his wife and best friend of 25 years, Cris. Together, they also loved visiting flea markets and antique stores. Though John never achieved nor desired great notoriety or fame, he accomplished great things in his life and was a "Mighty Man" to those who had the gift of knowing his love, loyalty, and undying devotion to family, friends, and Publix.
John was preceded in death by his parents, James & Robbie Vickers and sister, Jamie Sue Miller. He is survived by his wife, Cris, his stepson, Darrell Hartgraves and his daughter-in-law Leslie Hartgraves, all of Lakeland. A graveside service will be conducted on Wednesday, March 2nd at 2:00 pm at Oak Hill Burial Park. Arrangements by Gentry Morrison Funeral Home, Southside Chapel.
