Lakeland Florida - Jerry Sutton 78 passed away on Wednesday October 8, 2014 at Kindred Hospital in Tampa Florida as a result of cardiac arrest.
Jerry was born February 11, 1936 to the late T.W. and Juanita Sutton (Cowan) in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and upon his mother’s passing was later raised by his aunt and uncle Irene and Dudley Cowan.
Jerry completed his education in the Philadelphia public school system where he graduated from Overbrook High in 1954 where he met and married his best friend Virginia Anne Smith in 1956. Four children were a result of this union, 3 daughters, Deborah, Susan, and Carol and 1 son Jerry Jr. affectionately known as Jake.
Jerry entered the Marine Corp in 1956 and received an honorable discharged Jan 16 1959. Upon leaving the military Jerry began work as a cab driver and then as florist and delivery person for Harold’s the Orchid Shop in downtown Philadelphia Pennsylvania and as his family began to grow Jerry began his career in Retail Sales as a driver for Lance Inc. where he would later retire, In the early 60’s he started a part time career at Liberty Bell Race Track now Parx Casino until they closed in 1986. He continued his career with Lance even after relocating to Lakeland Florida in 1994 and continued through his retirement in 1997. Unable to sit still he began working as toll collector for Polk Parkway until his health began to fail.
Jerry was preceded in death at early ages by his son Jake and his daughter Carol He leaves to cherish in his memory his wife of 57 years Virginia, 2 daughters Son-in-Law 5 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren; 9 In-Laws and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, those who called him Coach and friends
Funeral Mass will be held at St Anthony's Catholic Church on Saturday, Oct. 18th at 11 am and can be viewed via http://www.saintacc.org/saintanthony/live_church_cam
A second Memorial Service will be held at St. Benedicts Catholic Church Saturday November 1, 2014 11:00am Chelten Avenue and Garnett Streets Philadelphia PA 19141
Interment will be private in Philadelphia.
