Janice Hilger Garner
Lakeland - Janice Garner, 92, was born October 16, 1922, and was received into the loving arms of our Savior on May 31, 2015 of natural causes with her family at home.
Mrs. Garner was preceded in death by her parents, Harry and Lois Hilger, her husband of sixty-five years, Dr. Albert Garner, two brothers, Glen and James Hilger, one sister, Beatrice Hilger Tippin, and a granddaughter, Tamara Garner. She is survived by one son, George G. Garner (Carolyn), four grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild.
Prior to meeting her husband in seminary, she worked as an aircraft riveting instructor during the early days of World War II. After becoming a preacher’s wife, she followed her husband on numerous mission trips visiting fourteen foreign countries. Prior to heart trouble, she actively served her church and community as president of her local PTA and as president of the Henderson, Texas Women’s Forum. Moving to Florida in 1957, she supported her husband for the next seventeen years in his role as the first full-time president of the Florida Baptist Institute where she served for a short time as an instructor.
She had an extraordinary gift as a seamstress. She delighted in seeing people amazed at her ability to see the picture of a dress and sew it to perfection without a pattern. Her greatest passion in later years was her service to her Lord through Eastside Baptist Church of Mulberry.
We wish to thank Compassionate Care and Vitas Hospice services and especially a certain angel primary care nurse, Sharon Maxwell.
A service celebrating her life will be held at Eastside Baptist Church in Mulberry on Thurs. June 4th at. 1 pm. The family will receive visitors immediately prior to the service from 12 Noon to 1 pm.
In lieu of flowers, the family request that donations be given to Eastside Baptist Church, 301 NE 12th Ave. Mulberry or to Emmaus Baptist College (formerly Florida Baptist College), 706 Dew Bloom Rd Brandon, Florida.
