Felipe Wilfredo Martinez's Obituary
Felipe W Martinez, 98 of Lakeland Florida peacefully passed away on April 21, 2016 of natural causes with his family at his side. Felipe was born on September 28, 1917 in Guayos, Province of Sancti Spiritus, Cuba. He was the son of Don Jose Miguel Martinez and Doña Antonia Maria Plasencia. Felipe grew in a family of eleven siblings (seven brothers and three sisters). His father passed away when he was 19 years old and he took on the responsibility of being the head of the household, supporting his family financially and emotionally.
Felipe better known by his middle name, Wilfredo – was a very successful business man in Cuba. An avid agriculture and cattle-raising rancher, he introduced modern techniques, such as an efficient irrigation system, in the cultivation of crops in his 1300 acre rice farm, improving and increasing the yield. He was loved and respected by all his employees. During his lifetime, he owned various businesses and was also one of the first Cuban businessmen to contact Esso of America to facilitate the opening of the first Esso gas & service station - Servicentro W.F. Martinez of the Esso Motor Company. Other businesses included El Pais Grocery Store, an automotive parts store, a local theater, a highway and railway construction company along with the various livestock and rice farms.
He married Deyse Hernandez and lived in Cabaiguan, Cuba where he raised three daughters. Due to political and religious reasons had to leave his beloved Cuba in 1980 and settled in Union City, New Jersey. Even at the age of 63, he went to work at Keneth Too Clothing Warehouse to support his family. While in Cuba, Deyse studied the Bible and became one of Jehovah’s Witnesses – Felipe supported her with her beliefs and would go with her and the family to the Kingdom Hall to worship with them. Eventually in 2001, Felipe dedicated himself to Jehovah and showed this by his baptism at the Stanley Theater - Jersey City Assembly Hall. In 2006 he moved with several members of his family to Lakeland Florida, where he resided until his passing.
Felipe was an extremely honest, hardworking and selfless man, full of integrity and compassion for others. He was a family man and a peaceful man. One of his greatest joys was to have the family come together for a meal where he loved to sit with his grandchildren and tell them stories of his life in Cuba. He always instilled strong family values, stressing to his loved ones to care for each other with dignity and respect.
In addition to his wife of 62 years, Felipe is survived by his four children (and their spouses): Maria A. Martinez, Daisy (Luis) Bas, and Margarita (Henry) Valdes. He was previously married to Caridad Busto with two children: Milagros (Julio) Garcia and Lissette Martinez (wife of his deceased son R. Wilfredo) along with a niece and nephew which he raised as his children – Maria Meneses and Mario Max; and twelve grandchildren: Rogelio (Karen) Martinez, Julio J Garcia, Gabriel Garcia, Anthony Garcia, Ronald Garcia, Diego Valdes, Emily Valdes, Jonathan Bas, Nathaniel Bas, Analicia Bas, Michael Martinez, Gabriela A. Martinez; and two great-grandchildren: Charlotte Martinez and Miranda Martinez.

Felipe nació el 28 de septiembre de 1917 en Guayos, Provincia de Sancti Spíritus, Cuba. Era hijo de Don José Miguel Martínez y Doña Antonia María Plasencia. Felipe creció en una familia de once hermanos (siete hermanos y tres hermanas). Su padre falleció cuando él a penas tenía 19 años y él asumió la responsabilidad de ser el cabesa de la familia, manteniendola económicamente y emocionalmente.
Felipe más conocido por su segundo nombre, Wilfredo - era un hombre de negocios muy exitoso en Cuba. Un ávido en el campo de la agricultura y la ganaderia. El introdujo técnicas modernas, tales como un sistema de regadio eficiente, en el cultivo de arroz en su finca de 40 caballeria, que mejoro y aumento el rendimiento. Era querido y respetado por todos sus empleados. Durante su vida, era propietario de varios negocios y también fue uno de los primeros empresarios cubanos para contactar Esso de América para facilitar la apertura de la primera estación de gasolina y servicio - Servicentro W. F. Martínez de la Esso Motor Company. Otros negocios incluyen el supermercado El País, una tienda de piesas de repuestos de automobile, un teatro local, una empresa de construcción de carreteras y lineas de ferrocarril con varias fincas de ganado y porcino.
Se casó con Deyse Hernández y vivío en Cabaiguán, Cuba donde crió a sus tres hijas. Debido a razones políticas y religiosas tuvieron que abandonar su amada Cuba en 1980 y se instaló en Union City, New Jersey. Aun a la edad de 63 años, trabajo en los Almacénes de ropa - Keneth Too para mantener a su familia. Estando en Cuba, Deyse estudió la Biblia y se baptiso como uno de los Testigos de Jehová - Felipe la apoyó con sus creencias e asistiendo con ella y la familia al Salón del Reino. Finalmente, en 2001, Felipe se dedicó a servir a Jehová y lo mostró con su bautismo en el Teatro Stanley - Jersey City Assembly Hall. En 2006 se trasladó con varios miembros de su familia a Lakeland Florida, donde residió hasta su muerte.
Felipe fue un hombre honesto, trabajador y generoso, lleno de integridad y compasión por los demás. Él era un hombre pacífico de familia. Una de sus mayores alegrías fue tener su familia reúnida en una cena donde le gustaba sentarse con sus nietos y compartir historias de su vida en Cuba. Él siempre inculcó buenos valores familiares, enseñandoles a sus seres queridos a cuidar unos a otros con dignidad y respeto.
Además de su esposa de 62 años, Felipe le sobreviven sus cuatro hijos (y sus cónyuges): María A. Martínez, Daisy (Luis) Bas, y Margarita (Henry) Valdes. Previamente el estuvo casado con Caridad Busto con quien tuvo dos hijos: Milagros (Julio) García y Lissette Martínez (esposa de su hijo fallecido R. Wilfredo) ademas de sus sobrinos que crio como sus hijos - Maria Meneses y Mario Max; y doce nietos: Rogelio (Karen) Martinez, Julio J Garcia, Gabriel García, Anthony Garcia, Ronald García, Diego Valdes, Emily Valdes, Jonathan Bas, Nathaniel Bas, Analicia Bas, Michael Martínez, Gabriela A. Martinez; y dos bisnietos: Charlotte y Miranda Martínez.
