Master Sergeant Bernard W. Newman, 82
Master Sergeant Bernard W. Newman was born in Massachusetts on December 15, 1932. He was born to eternal life on November 29, 2015 in Lakeland Florida. He attended school in New Haven, Connecticut and entered Military service in 1950. Sergeant Newman served with B-36, Project Rapid Fire, as Team Sergeant with A- 361. He retired from military service in 1972 and attended Rollins College, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts Degree.
Sergeant Newman served the nation he loved across the world, in not only three tours in Vietnam, but also in other countries including the Philippines, Germany, Panama, and Dominican Republic.
Sergeant Newman is the recipient of the Combat Infantry Badge, Master Parachutist Badge, Silver Star, First Oak Leaf Cluster; Bronze Star “V”, First Silver Cluster, Army Commendation “V”, First Silver Cluster, Two Oak Leaf Clusters, Purple Heart, Second Oak Leaf Cluster, and the Air Medal, Second Oak Leaf Cluster.
Bernard inspired loyalty from all who served with him. He was a Special Operations Green Beret and maintained a relationship with those he honorably served with, to the day he died.
Bernard was predeceased by his parents, Arthur Daniel Newman and Elizabeth (Keough) Newman, and sister Elizabeth Mishler. He is survived by his wife of 56 years Lauretta F. Newman and his brother Arthur Daniel Newman II. Also, surviving him are extended family members and his comrades in arms who became lifelong friends.
A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, 820 Marcum Road, Lakeland, Florida on Friday, December 4, 2015, at 11:00 a.m. Arrangements by Gentry Morrison funeral home. There will be no prior viewing or visitation except for close family. Internment will take place in Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
