Bernard C. Johnson, Jr.
Lakeland – Bernard C. Johnson, Jr, passed away on his 90th birthday, March 25, 2015. He was born March 25, 1925 in Winston Salem, NC and later moved to the Lakeland area in 1954 from Graham, NC. He served his country as a Combat and Glider Pilot in the 9th Air Force during WWII. Mr. Johnson was President of Polk Federal Savings and later retired from First Federal. He was very active in the community serving as Deacon & Elder at First Presbyterian Church, member of Lone Palm Country Club, former Adjutant Post 4 American Legion, Past Director of Lakeland Rotary, Lakeland Yacht and Country Club, Friends of the Library and Camp Fire Girls, Past President PTA Cleveland Court Elementary School and Lakeland Chamber of Commerce and volunteered at Southwest Elementary School.
Mr. Johnson is survived by his wife, Betty McCranie Johnson; children, Barnard C. Johnson, III, Deborah Boyd, Judi Cowan and Betsy Ann Snow; step children, Troy M. Akins and Leslie L. Askew; 9 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.
Interment will take place at a later date in Winston Salem, NC at God’s Acre Moravian Cemetery. Condolences may be given to the family at www.gentry-morrison.com. Arrangements by Gentry-Morrison Funeral Home, Southside Chapel.
