Barbara "Granny" Mercer Costine's Obituary
Barbara “Granny” Mercer Costine, beloved Mother, Granny and Friend, died on April 5, 2023 at the age of 85, with family that adored her by her side until she gained her wings. Her loss is profoundly felt by everyone that loved her.
Barbara “Granny” was born in Clearwater, Fl, on August 21, 1937 to Fred Mercer and Clifford Rhimes. She was married to John “Harry” Costine for 41 loving years. He preceded her in death in 1992. She is survived by her loving son Bobby Costine and preceded in death by her son John (Johnny) Costine that she missed so very much. Barbara “Granny” was also preceded in death by her loving siblings Pat Taylor, Betty Mcdonald, Freddy Mercer and George Mercer. She was a loving mother figure to Freddy and George for many years.
Barbara “Granny” Mercer Costine was known for her loving heart, and cooking. She retired from Publix after 25 years. Her ability to make the most amazing cakes was profound. If she wasn’t in the kitchen, you would find her yard selling with friends. Her home and heart were the staple of all her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
She is survived by 8 grandchildren: Donny Costine (Kady), Johnny Ray Costine, Becky Albritton (Clint), Betty Ann Long, Stacy Croft, Leeann Croft (Al), Bobbie Jo Updike (Levi), and Jessica Lawson; 17 great grandchildren; 6 great great grandchildren and so many more she considered as grandchildren that loved her deeply.
What was special about Granny is she always looked at life as if the cup was half full never half empty. She made a loving life out of what she had and never needed anything more than just her family. Granny wasn’t just a wife, mother or grandmother, she was our safe place, Granny was home. Anyone that had known Granny has been left with a feeling of unconditional love.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, April 15th, 2023, from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM, and a funeral service will immediately follow at 10:00 AM at Gentry-Morrison Funeral Home, -Serenity Gardens Chapel (3350 Mall Hill Dr, Lakeland, FL 33810).
