The Music Teacher
In honor of Marilyn Everly
She was a great teacher. She shared her gift of music with anyone who wanted it. She taught many to play. I did not learn to play from her, I was fortunate enough to sit under her direction for a time. I am a better musician because of it. She let me play with the “big band” before I was ready. Song of choice for that service, “Goodbye World, Goodbye” I moved my fingers and maybe played every 5th note.
I can still see her standing in front of the band at the old church teaching us to play “Only the Redeemed” and “It Will Rain Again” she believed in my abilities when I didn’t. I always knew who to call when I had a music theory question. If she wasn’t talking about music she was talking about Jesus and how much He loved us. I can still feel her hands on my face while she would talk to me. Words I can hear ringing in my ears are, “Oh honey”, or “sweet pea”. She took us teenagers to Camp Ground, and to music seminars, when she was the only adult driving. She loved us Big!
