Obituary

Dorothy June Denning Ballard, born July 8, 1943, passed away on October 1, 2026.

“

Dorothy built a life marked by hard work, devotion, and a strong, unmistakable spirit.

A 1960 graduate of Lakeland High School, Dorothy built a life marked by hard work, devotion, and a strong, unmistakable spirit. She worked at Allen and Company as a receptionist and later spent more than 20 years at Publix as a cashier, where her steady presence and way with people reflected both her kindness and her honesty.

Dorothy loved being outdoors and took great pride in flowers and plants, tending her yard with meticulous care and making its beauty a reflection of the care she gave to so much in life. She was tenderhearted toward animals and could never turn away one in need. She was also known in her family as the meteorologist, always keeping watch and making sure loved ones knew when difficult weather might be on the way. She enjoyed old classic television and movies, especially those filled with humor, and she treasured taking photographs of her family. A devoted Alabama football fan, she cheered with enthusiasm and spirit: Roll Tide.

Those who knew Dorothy will remember a woman who was spicy and outspoken, someone who made sure you always knew where you stood with her. Yet alongside that strength was a deeply kind and helpful heart. She was tenderhearted, especially toward people and animals in need, but she also stood her ground. One of her greatest gifts was the way she stayed connected with every generation of her family across the United States, keeping bonds close through care, attention, and love.

Dorothy is survived by her daughter, Amie Jeffords and her husband Shawn, and her son, Scott Ballard and his wife, Trish. She also leaves behind her beloved grandchildren, Nathan Ballard, Erin Ballard, Holly Walker, Austin Jeffords, Katlynn Jeffords, and Garrett Jeffords, as well as her great-grandchild, Cooper Lankford. The love she shared with her family reached across generations, and her presence in their lives will continue to be felt in treasured memories, family stories, and the many ways she kept everyone connected.

She was preceded in death by her parents, David Bradley and Mary Irene Denning; husband, James Howard Ballard and sister, Mary Lou Coleman.
