Obituary

Clarice “Jean” Trim, lovingly known by her chosen name Jean, passed away peacefully at home on June 11, 2026, at the age of 95. She was born on December 20, 1930, in Fairy Hill, Portland, Jamaica, to Etheline Shirley and George McKenzie.

Clarice spent her early years in Fairy Hill, where she attended Shirley Castle School—named for the many members of the Shirley family who lived in the area. She shared a close bond with her cousins, especially Glen, Doris, and Pearl, and with her lifelong best friend, Pauline Neill. Throughout her childhood, she lived at various times with her mother Etheline (“Aunt Ettie”), her siblings George and Carmen, her father George (“Uncle Putt”), and her maternal grandparents, Etheline and Robert Shirley. She often spoke with deep affection about her grandparents, especially her grandmother, whose love and warmth shaped her early life.

In her late teens, Clarice moved to Kingston in search of greater opportunities. She later became the devoted mother of three children: Nicholas, Carol, and Paulette. In 1953, she married her first husband, Derrick Aiken, and in 1957 the family moved to London, England, as part of the Windrush generation. Though the marriage eventually ended, Clarice remained steadfast in her commitment to her children and their future.

Clarice later met and married Samuel Trim, who brought two sons, Ancil and Kenwrick, into her life. She embraced her blended family wholeheartedly. Clarice was a dedicated wife and mother, raising her children with strong values, good manners, and practical life skills. Her home was always open, warm, and welcoming—no one ever visited without being offered a meal.

In 1975, Clarice and Sam moved to the United States, settling first in Orange, New Jersey. Clarice continued her lifelong career in Accounts Management, a field in which she excelled. After retirement, the couple moved to Davenport, Florida, where they enjoyed a peaceful life in the beautiful home they created together.

Clarice’s retirement was filled with simple joys. She loved board games, crossword puzzles, watching her favorite soap operas, celebrating birthdays, and hosting family and friends. She was known for her immaculate home, her generosity, and her unwavering reliability—Clarice was never late paying a bill and never forgot a special occasion.

Clarice is survived by her children Nicholas, Paulette, Ansil and Kenwrick; her brother Jeffrey and by her many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her beloved husband Sam, her daughter Carol, her granddaughter Rhonda, and by her siblings Dorothy, George and Carmen

A Celebration of Life will be held at 12 noon on July 11, 2026, at Gentry-Morrison Funeral Home in Lakeland, Florida.

Clarice’s beautiful spirit, warmth, and generosity touched everyone who knew her. Her memory will be cherished forever.
