Burton "Burt" Baird, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend of Lakeland, Florida, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on October 29, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of faith, love, service, and countless lives forever touched by his kindness.
Born in Whitinsville, Massachusetts, Burt was the son of the late Wilbur and Norma Baird. He graduated from Northbridge High School in Whitinsville in 1959 and went on to proudly serve his country in the United States Air Force from 1960 to 1968.
During his military service, Burt was stationed at Albrook Air Force Base in the Panama Canal Zone and Homestead Air Force Base in Florida, among other locations. He served as a Military Police Officer for his first four years before earning his Aircraft Mechanics license and spending the remainder of his eight-year service in aircraft maintenance. It was while stationed at Albrook that Burt met the love of his life, Gloria "Rusty." Their wedding day was anything but ordinary. After two bridesmaids were involved in a car accident while traveling to the rehearsal (Burt and Rusty were not involved), the couple exchanged their vows in a hospital room at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Miami, Florida. The Miami Herald captured their unforgettable wedding day, beginning a love story that would span 62 beautiful years.
Following his honorable military service, Burt and Rusty chose Homestead, Florida, as the place to put down roots and raise their family, calling it home for the next 20 plus years. Burt began his civilian aviation career with National Airlines and later Pan Am Airlines, where he dedicated a combined 23 years of service. He also served on the Pan Am Credit Union Board for more than eight years. Later, he shared his extensive knowledge and experience as an Airframe and Powerplant (A&P) Mechanics Instructor at George T. Baker Aviation Technical College before eventually retiring.
Burt and Rusty later made their home in Davie, Florida, for 15 years before settling in Lakeland, where they have resided for the past 18 years.
Throughout every chapter of their lives, their faith remained a constant. Their church family was always an important part of their journey, spending 20 years at Homestead Church of God, 15 years at Cooper City Church of God, and the last 18 years at Trinity Christian Center in Lakeland, where Burt was a devoted member.
If you ever had the blessing of hearing Burt sing, you were truly blessed! Burt was gifted with a beautiful bass voice and a love of music that he shared throughout his life. While in Panama, he participated in the college choir and continued sharing his musical talents as a member of the choirs at Homestead Church of God, Cooper City Church of God, and Trinity Christian Center. He also sang with United in Praise, a Florida-based singing group of members representing more than 45 different denominations. Whether singing in a church choir or joining his voice with others in worship, music was one of the many ways Burt expressed his love for the Lord.
Burt's faith extended far beyond the church walls. He served as a youth leader, taught Sunday School to junior high students, and participated in the Young Married ministry and Marriage Encounter. He also devoted his time to volunteer work and serving others whenever the opportunity arose.
Burt was a beautiful soul who left a tangible mark on everyone he encountered. A quiet and humble fellow by nature, he also had a wonderfully funny side and a sense of humor that brought smiles and laughter to those around him. Together, Burt and Rusty were the embodiment of what it meant to be the Hands and Feet of Christ. Their home was more than just a place to gather; it was a place of welcome, encouragement, prayer, and unconditional love. Their front door was always open to anyone who needed a listening ear, a kind word, a little encouragement, or someone willing to pray with them. They didn't simply speak about living out their faith; they demonstrated it through the way they welcomed, loved, and served others.
Above all else, Burt loved Jesus, his family, music, and the opportunity to make a difference in someone's life. His legacy will live on not only through the beautiful family he and Rusty built, but also through the countless lives he touched along the way.
Burt is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Rusty.
He was preceded in death by his oldest son, Mark (BethAnn). Mark's legacy lives on through his four children, Burt's beloved grandchildren: Estefania Mishkin (Josh), Jordan Clester (Jeremiah), Jessica Angleton (Brandon), and Madison Dunlap (Antwone).
Burt is also survived by his son, David (Jodi), and their children: Ryan Baird, Riley Baird (Jaedyn), and Rayni Choate (Nathan).
He is also survived by his brother, Charles Baird (JoAnn); his sister, Dottie Conway (Chris); and 13 beautiful great-grandchildren, who brought another special generation of love and joy into his life.
Though Burt will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him, his family finds comfort in knowing that his earthly struggles are over and that he is now resting in the arms of Jesus. His voice may be silent here on earth, but the songs he sang, the prayers he prayed, the love he shared, and the lives he touched will continue to echo for generations to come.
